Clinton Hubris

Bill Clinton got the title for his book, Between Hope and History, from The Cure of Troy, a play by 1995 Nobel Laureate Seamus Heaney. When Clinton visited Northern Ireland, Heaney wrote out as a gift the following passage, which now hangs in Clinton's study in the White House:

History says, ‘Don't hope
On this side of the grave.'
But then, once in a lifetime
The longed-for tidal wave
Of justice can rise up,
And hope and history rhyme.

Poetic Hubris

A tidal wave of justice
He says is coming down,
But if it lives up to its name
I know who's sure to drown.

Rolling over treachery,
Can't you hear the roar,
As it makes its way up from
Our nation's eastern shore?

Bearing down on Washington
And high-level crime,
Melding hope and history
In the nick of time.
